The passing of TILT

Michele Ostrow of University of Texas Libraries has announced they will be taking down TILT (Texas Information Literacy Tutorial) effective August 14, 2009. The open public license version will be available until May 2010, and then that will be taken down as well.

TILT (http://tilt.lib.utsystem.edu/) has been a popular IL tutorial and was well known due to its open publication license. Unfortunately, UT hasn’t had the staff resources to update TILT for years and no longer uses TILT as part of their information literacy program.

Although written for college students, it could be used by anyone wanting to improve research skills. The tutorial was modular and each module included a lesson, interactions, and a quiz. The design allowed users to finish each module in about 30 minutes.

At various times, I considered using TILT with classes, but never did. I can’t help feeling nostalgic about the passing of TILT and wonder if this marks a change in information literacy instruction in general.
